Your vehicle has many different warning lights that may illuminate on the instrument cluster to notify you that your vehicle needs serviced or testing. The check engine light can come on for hundreds of different reasons related to engine or powertrain performance. When your check engine light comes on and it is solid, it is usually safe to continue to drive the vehicle. It is recommended to get your vehicle checked out as soon as you are able because other expensive components could be damaged if a failure is ignored. The light might also mean that your fuel economy has been compromised or your vehicle is polluting more than it should be. When the light comes on pay attention to see if any other symptoms are present. For example: Does the vehicle run rough? Are there any unusual smells or noises? Did the light come on shortly after filling your gas tank? Many symptoms associated with a check engine light are undetectable to the driver such as a small fuel vapor leak or a slow switching oxygen sensor. If the check engine light comes on and is flashing this means the engine is experiencing misfires that could damage the vehicle’s catalytic converter. It is not recommended to drive your vehicle with a flashing check engine light since it can cause more damage to the vehicle.

The computer that controls the engine is either called the PCM (powertrain control module) or the ECM (engine control module). This computer scans the vehicles operating systems and sensors with every drive cycle. If it senses that a component is not functioning properly it sets a “trouble code” that is stored and sets a warning light in the dash. There is a common myth that technicians can just plug a computer in to your car and it tells us what is wrong. What actually happens is this code gives us guidance about which engine management system is malfunctioning. Once we determine what the trouble code is, we will test all the components that are involved in operation of the system both electrically and mechanically. WARNING: If your oil pressure light is on or your temperature gauge is past the halfway point, you should pullover as soon as it is safe and have the vehicle towed. Continuing to drive during an overheat condition or low oil pressure condition can cause catastrophic damage.
